As the U.S. and Canada Clash, China Stands Ready to Step in and Sell the Cars of the Future

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney signaled a major shift in Canada’s trade and industrial strategy this week, warning of a “rupture in the world order” while simultaneously moving to deepen economic ties with China through a new trade agreement that sharply lowers tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

The agreement, announced days before Carney’s speech in Davos, Switzerland, reduces Canada’s tariff on Chinese-made EVs from 100% to 6.1%. The move is expected to significantly increase the presence of Chinese electric vehicles in the Canadian market and could intensify pressure on North American automakers already facing mounting global competition in the transition toward electrification.

China has rapidly emerged as the global leader in electric vehicle manufacturing, battery production and EV technology, while Canada remains one of the most important export markets for US-built vehicles and light trucks. Although steep tariffs continue to limit Chinese EV access to the United States, Chinese automakers have steadily expanded their reach across global markets, including Mexico and now Canada.

Industry analysts warn the development could create long-term challenges for major US automakers such as Ford, General Motors and Tesla. As Chinese manufacturers expand internationally and global markets accelerate toward electric mobility, there are growing concerns that US automakers could become increasingly dependent on domestic sales while losing influence in international markets. The changing competitive landscape also comes amid broader trade tensions between the United States, Canada and Mexico, adding further uncertainty to North America’s automotive sector.

The policy shift highlights how global EV competition is increasingly becoming intertwined with geopolitical strategy, trade policy and industrial development. Governments across North America, Europe and Asia continue racing to secure supply chains, battery manufacturing and technological leadership as the global auto industry undergoes one of its largest transformations in decades.
