Honda signals no change to postponed $15B Canadian investment as it cancels 3 EVs, warns of big loss

Honda Motor Co.’s decision to cancel three planned electric vehicle models and prepare for a multibillion-dollar write-down is not expected to immediately affect the company’s postponed electric vehicle and battery investment plans in Canada, according to industry reports.

The Japanese automaker recently scaled back portions of its global EV strategy amid slowing demand growth and shifting market conditions, including the cancellation of several upcoming electric vehicle programs. Honda is also expected to record a substantial financial write-down tied to its changing electrification plans. Despite those developments, the company’s delayed Canadian investment project remains formally postponed rather than cancelled.

Honda had previously announced plans for a major $15-billion electric vehicle manufacturing and battery production initiative in Ontario, including new EV assembly operations and battery facilities tied to its broader North American electrification strategy. Earlier this year, the company confirmed it would indefinitely suspend those plans, citing evolving business conditions and uncertainty surrounding the pace of EV market adoption.

While the latest global restructuring efforts have intensified concerns around Honda’s long-term EV ambitions, analysts and industry observers say there has been no indication that the company has abandoned its Canadian plans entirely. The Ontario investment remains one of the largest proposed automotive manufacturing projects in Canada and forms part of broader efforts to establish a domestic electric vehicle supply chain spanning battery materials, component manufacturing and vehicle assembly.

The developments highlight growing pressure across the global auto industry as manufacturers adjust electrification timelines amid weaker-than-expected EV demand growth, rising production costs and increasing competition. Several automakers have recently delayed or revised EV investments while continuing to balance long-term decarbonization goals with near-term financial performance and consumer demand trends.
