TSA Gold+ just launched. Here’s what changes at the security checkpoint.

Category: Business

A new public-private airport security initiative known as TSA Gold+ is being introduced nationwide as part of President Donald Trump’s broader effort to expand the privatization of airport screening operations under the Transportation Security Administration.

The program, first reported by Caleb Harmon-Marshall of Gate Access, expands the TSA’s existing Screening Partnership Program (SPP), under which private contractors conduct passenger screening while operating under federal security standards. The initiative follows renewed concerns over the agency’s dependence on congressional funding after tens of thousands of TSA employees went without pay during an earlier partial government shutdown.

Speaking before the House Appropriations Committee in April, TSA deputy administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill said the agency’s workforce and operational stability could not rely on predictable congressional appropriations alone. McNeill proposed expanding the use of private screening contractors to maintain uninterrupted airport operations during future federal funding disruptions.

Under TSA Gold+, airports can opt into customized public-private screening models designed to improve operational flexibility and accelerate the deployment of new technologies. According to the TSA, participating private contractors will be permitted to tailor local screening operations for greater efficiency while remaining under federal oversight. The agency said the initiative is intended to reduce taxpayer burdens by encouraging privately funded infrastructure upgrades and innovation.

The TSA said travelers may initially notice little difference at security checkpoints beyond changes in screener uniforms, although the agency expects the program to eventually introduce faster and more locally adapted screening experiences. Current Screening Partnership Program participants include airports such as San Francisco International Airport and Kansas City International Airport, though most participating locations are smaller regional or tourism-focused airports. A full list of TSA Gold+ airports has not yet been released.

The initiative differs from TSA PreCheck, which is a paid traveler program allowing expedited screening access through designated security lanes. TSA Gold+ instead focuses on operational management of checkpoints through private-sector partnerships while maintaining federal security standards.
